Additional work steps require new timeline for ISO 9001:2025/26

The revision of ISO 9001 has been delayed: In the next step, an additional draft – a so-called Committee Draft 2 (CD2) – will be prepared. As a result, the revised quality management system standard is not expected to be published until 2026 instead of the end of 2025, as previously planned. This is one of the results of the last ISO meetings, which took place in July partly in Detroit, partly online. At the meetings, the members of the ISO TC 176 review working group went through the current Committee Draft (CD) and began to evaluate and incorporate the comments. Subsequently, the decision was made that ISO 9001 would go through an additional committee draft (CD2).

Assessing the situation, Thomas Votsmeier, Head of Standardization DGQ, EOQ representative at ISO TC 176 and member of the ISO committee as well as technical director of the corresponding mirror committee at DIN stated: "The current status of the document is not yet ready for a Draft International Standard (DIS)," says,. "Due to some structural decisions that are still unresolved, a large number of comments that have not yet been processed and the lack of a coordinated explanatory annex, we have clearly advocated the creation of a CD2. The decision of the SC2 management is assessed positively and purposefully by us." At the follow-up meetings of September 2024, decisions will be made on comments that have not yet been conclusively assessed and on the structure of the revised appendix. An updated schedule with a description of the further procedure will also be then presented.

ISO TC 176 had announced the early revision of the quality management system standard in August 2023. The revision primarily adapts the structure of the standard to the "harmonized structure" for management system standards and provides explanations of requirements and principles that require explanation. As things stand at present, organizations will face new or changed requirements on the following topics: ethics and integrity, vision, mission and values, quality culture and dealing with opportunities and risks.
